Dear Friends
I want to begin by saying a big thank you for the cards and gifts received on the occasion of my Ordination. It was a very moving and overwhelming experience, and wonderful to be able to share it with you.
One of the readings at our first act of worship at our Ordinands’ Retreat was from Psalm 1, verse 3:
“…that person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.”
As we look at our parched gardens from this beautiful summer sunshine, it makes you wonder how the trees continue to grow! But the earth below is well watered and sustains the trees that are deeply rooted.
The Psalm is a simple but effective poem of ‘wisdom teaching’, which introduces the reader to the theme of God’s Tora, the Law. The Psalmist envisages the meditation of the Law as of the highest delight (verse 2), and one that is fruitful.
As the tree is planted firmly beside the steams of water, it has a constant supply during regular long, hot droughts. Its roots are well nourished and the tree is able to provide fruit in its due season.
The Psalm teaches us to trust in God and draw deep upon his grace, which is life-giving. As we meditate upon God through prayer and studying the Bible, God reveals himself to us, as he guides us in all that we do. Just as the fruit of the tree can be shared with others and offer nourishment to them, so too can the fruit of a person’s life who serves God be shared for the benefit of others.
In August, there may be periods of rest – school holidays, family holidays, and time to be spent with friends. Perhaps this could be a time to reflect on our discipleship. What connects you to God? What nourishes you? What do you need to feel refreshed?
You may be interested to know that in September the Prayer Groups recommence and a new Bible Study group will begin. Please do look out for news in the church notices.
There is also a sense of anticipation in the month of August, for September brings new beginnings – and we wish our young people well in their new classes and new schools.
May we all feel refreshed and energised for a new term!
